DAY # 232- PINK DAHLIAS

#232 - pink dahlias (1)

Pink dahlia day.

Yesterday I sketched this painting out early, because I feared my dahlias were at full bloom and wouldn’t make it another day.

Guess I was right.  I came in this morning and the petals were falling before my eyes.

What a gorgeous flower.  The petals start white, move into yellows and the tops are a perfect mix of pink and purple.  I just can’t put my finger on that shade.  After taking the photo and finishing up for the day, I realize I need to add one more layer of purple to the center dahlia, to give it a bit more depth.  I’ll have to sneak that in tomorrow.

This 9×12″ painting makes painting #8 in my windowsill series.  I’m painting all of the vases of flowers placed on my windowsill, that look out by my kitchen sink.  The premise is all the common flowers you’d find in a New England garden. I made the bud vases in pottery.  Here is the progression thus far:

I’m almost at the point of having a full kitchen of flowers, but I still have a few more favorites like the tiger lily and Buddleia, the butterfly bush. I guess the question is do I want a wall of ten or a wall with 12?  Ten is easier, I’d only have two left, but twelve can be divided into 3 groups of 4 or 4 groups of 3.  It’s a more harmonious number…Guess I’ll just have to see where the week takes me. I do love French Marigolds and I have some really pretty Phlox varieties too….hmm…Still have plenty of vases to fill as well!

OK.  Off I go, I did some painting on my top-secret outdoor shower re-hab which equals = muscle aches.  I’m juggling the floral series and outdoor shower all at once.  I’m sparing you the hard labor of painting, sawing, scraping and all that good stuff…I’ll report on it toward the end of the week after I begin to make some head-way.

Off to enjoy some peace and quiet and snuggle up with a good book.

Good night All.

  1. Mary – Your work is always beautiful and bright and joyous. All the pieces are very distinctively you. I can always tell your work in reader before I see your name! Keep us the gorgeous work girl!

    • Thank you! I really needed to hear that! When I started this challenge, that was my worry. I didn’t feel like I had a specific “style”. Now as I go along, I am slowly seeing it myself. No matter what, my hand draws things a certain way, and no matter what, I gravitate towards the same color palette…I’m learning so much about myself along the way. It feels good. Thank you for checking in. The journey can seem lonely at times!
